Underline Text
Unicode underlining adds marks below the letters. Single and double underline are separate combining effects, not a link or a formatting command.
| Style | Generated sample |
|---|---|
| Underline | H̲e̲l̲l̲o̲ 1̲2̲3̲ |
| Double Underline | H̳e̳l̳l̳o̳ 1̳2̳3̳ |
| Wavy | H̰ḛl̰l̰o̰ 1̰2̰3̰ |
Single versus Double Underline
Single underline adds U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE; double underline adds U+0333 COMBINING DOUBLE LOW LINE. A̲ is A plus one mark. Spaces and control characters are left unchanged by these styles. A tilde below is a related decorative option, not a straight underline.
Broken Lines and Descenders
The renderer positions each mark. The lines can look disconnected or overlap descenders such as g and p. Increasing line height in a document you control can help, but this tool cannot change the destination app’s layout.
Avoid Confusing Readers
Underlined text can resemble a link without being clickable. Keep actual links and navigation in ordinary text. For an accessible document or web page, use semantic formatting and CSS instead of substituting marks. Combining marks add code points even when the visible letter count does not change.
One Mark Is Not Two Characters of Underline
Double Underline adds a single combining character after each eligible base, just as Single Underline does. The word “double” describes the mark's appearance, not two separate low-line characters. The three selector choices use these exact assignments:
| Option | Added code point |
|---|---|
| Underline | U+0332 |
| Double Underline | U+0333 |
| Wavy | U+0330 |
Converting ab with any of these choices produces two grapheme clusters and four code points. The base letters are retained. Digits and punctuation receive marks too; ordinary spaces, tabs and line breaks do not. Consequently, a space between two words has no underline character of its own.
Accent spelling also affects the sequence. Single Underline converts precomposed é to é̲, containing two code points. When the input is instead e followed by a separate acute accent, the result is é̲, containing three code points. Both samples remain one grapheme cluster in the engine's counter. This difference comes from how the input was encoded, even before the underline was added.
Before You Paste
Check underlined letters with descenders in the receiving editor, where the marks can collide with the letters or appear disconnected.
