Small Text
Small caps, superscript and subscript are three different character substitutions. They do not set a smaller CSS font size.

| Superscript | Hᵉˡˡᵒ ¹²³ |
| Subscript | Hₑₗₗₒ ₁₂₃ |
Three Kinds of Small Text
Small caps approximate reduced-height capitals using phonetic and modifier letters. Superscript sits above the baseline; subscript sits below it. Their coverage is incomplete, so a converted word can contain letters at different heights.
Exact Subscript Coverage in This Tool
The lowercase letters mapped by this engine are a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. All ten digits are mapped. Uppercase letters and other lowercase letters remain unchanged. Superscript maps lowercase letters except q, plus digits; it does not provide a complete uppercase alphabet.
Annotations versus Mathematical Layout
A short annotation can use these characters where accepted. For equations, scientific notation or accessible footnotes, use a document editor’s real super/subscript or semantic markup. A Unicode substitution cannot reproduce general mathematical positioning. Do not make essential qualifications difficult to read by shrinking them decoratively.
Why Hhqx Does Not Shrink Uniformly
Small Caps converts Hhqx to Hʜǫx. Uppercase H stays unchanged, lowercase h is substituted, q becomes an approximation, and x retains its original form. In fact, every uppercase ASCII letter and all ten digits stay plain in Small Caps.
| Style | Input | Output | Code point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Caps | H | H | U+0048 |
| Small Caps | h | ʜ | U+029C |
| Small Caps | q | ǫ | U+01EB |
| Small Caps | x | x | U+0078 |
| Superscript | q | q | U+0071 |
| Superscript | 1 | ¹ | U+00B9 |
| Superscript | 2 | ² | U+00B2 |
| Superscript | 3 | ³ | U+00B3 |
The superscript rows highlight a different gap: q stays on the baseline, while 1, 2 and 3 use assignments outside the range used for 4 through 9 (U+2074–U+2079). Superscript also preserves every uppercase input letter.
Subscript digits form a continuous sequence, U+2080–U+2089, but lowercase b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z remain unchanged. These are mapping limits, not a font-size setting. Read how Unicode substitutions differ from actual fonts for the distinction between changing a character and drawing it smaller.
Before You Paste
Small Caps leaves uppercase letters such as H full-size and lowercase x unchanged, so inspect the actual spelling instead of expecting uniform tiny capitals.
