Strikethrough Text

Strikethrough adds a combining overlay after each eligible base character. It does not delete the underlying text or hide information.

What the Line Contains

The main style adds U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY. Thus A̶ contains A plus one combining mark. A five-letter ASCII word gains five marks, although a grapheme counter can still see five graphemes. The slash overlay crosses diagonally; the underline comparison puts its mark below the text.

Native Formatting or Unicode?

Discord supports native ~~text~~ formatting in messages. WhatsApp uses ~text~ in message formatting. Native formatting changes presentation; Unicode overlays change the stored sequence. The resulting line need not look identical across fonts.

Corrections and Privacy

For an illustrative correction, put the replacement in ordinary text beside the crossed-out phrase. Do not use strikethrough to redact a secret: the original letters remain copyable, searchable depending on the system, and potentially readable by assistive technology. Some fields reject or normalize marks.

Punctuation Gets Crossed Out Too

The engine does not limit an overlay to alphabetic characters. Converting A! 9 with Strikethrough produces A̶!̶ 9̶: A, the exclamation mark and 9 each receive a mark, while the ordinary space stays bare. This four-grapheme sample contains seven code points and seven UTF-16 units.

The selector's three options append these marks after the original base:

OptionAdded code point
StrikethroughU+0336
SlashedU+0337
UnderlineU+0332

The slash and underline entries are comparisons with different mark placement. None replaces the base with a special crossed-out letter. Tabs and line breaks also pass through unchanged, so the converter does not draw one continuous stroke across a multiline phrase.

An existing accent survives the operation. For an e followed by a combining acute accent, the output sequence is U+0065 + U+0336 + U+0301: the original e, the newly inserted stroke, then the original accent. Reconstructing the input therefore requires distinguishing added decoration from accents that were already present.

Before You Paste

Combining strokes can be clipped or misplaced after paste; keep the correction readable without relying on the line alone.
